Code Red

Not because of the heat, but because of the lukewarmness
Code red. The Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) only issues this warning when a situation becomes truly serious. When the risks are high enough that people need to change their behaviour. Stay indoors. Avoid strenuous activity. Be prepared.

Perhaps it is time to issue that same warning for brands. Not because temperatures are rising outside, but because the temperature of many brands is falling. They are becoming safer, more cautious and increasingly interchangeable. No one wants to get it wrong, and as a result, many companies end up saying nothing at all.

The greatest threat is invisibility
Walk through any shopping street or open LinkedIn. Everywhere you look, you will find the same words: personal, innovative, sustainable, committed and authentic. They are all fine qualities, without question. But when everyone says the same thing, no one is really saying anything.

That may well be the real code red for branding. The biggest threat to a brand is not that people reject it. The real danger is that they simply stop noticing it. That it disappears among all the other companies that look, sound and feel exactly the same.

Playing it safe feels comfortable, but rarely delivers results
Many organisations believe branding starts with a new logo, a modern colour palette or a redesigned website. While a strong visual identity certainly helps, branding is rarely about appearance alone. It is about making choices. Having the courage to stand for something. Developing a distinct voice, a recognisable vision and a story that is not meant for everyone, but is exactly right for the people you want to reach.

And that is where things often go wrong. Out of fear of losing customers, companies try to appeal to everyone. But a brand that tries to be everything to everyone ultimately means very little to anyone.

AI makes design accessible, not character
Never before has it been so easy to create something that looks professional. With just a few prompts, you can generate a logo, a complete visual identity or an entire campaign that is technically impressive. As a result, the value is shifting. Not towards better design, but towards a stronger story.

AI can shape a brand. Character, however, still comes from people. From convictions, deliberate choices and the courage to be different.

It is time to turn up the temperature
Perhaps that is the real code red of our time. Not the heat outside, but the lukewarm nature of so many brands. Standing out is not the goal in itself, but becoming invisible is far more dangerous.

So before investing in a new logo or a fresh campaign, ask yourself one simple question: What do you want to be remembered for?

Because a brand that fails to move people rarely stays with them.
